I was wondering are SSD suppose to make sounds? I think mine is making a screeching noise when it is in use. I thought they were suppose to be silent? Thanks!

Electronic Whine sounds like, not sure if its normal for a SSD but I know its one of those things that some people can hear loud and clear and others never hear at all.

First performance degradation and now they're starting to make noise... what's next? vibration?

Well...if the sound is loud enough =P
So... I assume this is natural?

it's chaotic. some have it, most don't. maybe you could get a replacement? check if it's better, then.

I recently got an X-25M 160gig, and I've not noticed any sound from it...

I also updated to firmware 8820 right when I got it.

Id contact the manufacturer/seller and request a replacement if you don't mind living without it for awhile.

For me the piece of mind of knowing its ok after I get the replacement is much more valuable than constantly telling myself it may have a problem or break on me.

Also its not like some cheap item it was expensive so you want to make sure its working right.

I contacted Lenovo. The tech support told me to run a diagnostic test on the HD. It turned out to be fine so they can't do anything about it. I guess it's suppose to be like that. Most people probably won't be able to hear it though because it's a high frequency.

no it is different per drive. some do, some don't. just as some cpu's do, some psus, etc. if you cry enough they may replace it anyways.

of course the diagnostic test doesn't show up anything. it's not like it has tiny microphones on the ssd checking high pitched noise.. :)

Are you sure it is the drive? Sounds like that are typically caused by the processor, usually because it is switching frequencies.

It may not be the drive itself, but it is probably caused by the SSD. I'm not sure =( But I only heard it when the HD light lights up.

A high pitched wine at a particular frequency would overcome the loudest laptop fan in existence. If you check out some of the high frequency ringtones that they say people cant hear when they get about 30, their not loud their just ear piercing.

SSDs should not make any audible noises unless you have the hearing of a bat. I would recommend ensuring that the noise is indeed from the SSD, as there are other laptop components that make high-frequency noises (ex, CPU, LCD inverter). If it is indeed the SSD, request a replacement.

it can be anything that's a chip. but it shouldn't be, yep. i remember the switching-frequency issue..

    really no way? :(

then maybe you could find out where the ssd is exactly and listen? open the hdd tray maybe to check if you hear it more loud.

Some NVidia graphics cards, I think GTX 260's and 280's, were known to have screeching transistors, so it's not unheard of.

I was using the Intel 4500 and ATI Radeon 3650 (switchable graphics). The sound was apparent in both cases so I doubt it is the graphics card. Not to mention I only hear it when the HD light lights up.
