So, on the advice of various folks, I got a Dell notebook w/ 256 RAM and bought two 512 SODIMMs from Newegg. And they don't fit. The notch is off by about a millimeter. So close... but they're not gonna go in.

So what gives? Did I get the wrong RAM? (I don't remember the specs at this point, but at the time I checked them against some "what to put in your model ____" site.)

Inspiron 6000, Kingmax brand RAM, if it matters.

Well, to answer my own question, it looks like it's DDR and the Inspiron 6000 wants DDR2. Not sure how I missed that little detail the first time 'round...

Guess I better see if Newegg has a return policy for cluelessness.

You can return them, but you'll have to pay a 15% restocking fee + shipping. Now when you get DDR, remember to get the one specicially tested and okayed for your machine.

That's why I tell everyone to go to Crucial, good quality and you can't mess it up. As noted NE will likely take a restocking fee, take a look at eBay to see if you'll come out better there or post in our Buy, Sell, Trade forum.

a better option would simply sell them off at eBay and order a new chip.
memory is always in demand and you will always get a fair price.
