I have a HP Nx9010 and the hard drive is out of it (crashed). My son gave it to me to try to make it work again. I need to replace the hard drive but not sure with the specs if I can get a better hd for it. Does anyone know if I can get a higher capacity hd (more thatn 40GB) for it? I have a license for the OS - XP Pro.

The specs I printed from HP on this Notebook. Can it be upgraded to run a bit faster than it did when it was working?

    Any suggestions is very welcomed!

I don't want to spend a fortune on it, since it isn't a great pc anymore, but want to see if I can do it with some help from someone. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! I am not savy PC person, so laymen terms help!

Yes, you can put in any PATA/ATA-100 2.5" HDD that is 9.5mm in height.

It's possible that this notebook is old enough that the BIOS doesn't support 48-bit LBA and may not be able to use space above 137GB. 160GB may be the target to aim for since it is only about 150GB actual size and the performance of the single platter 160GB HDDs is very respectable. See this thread.

For more about the 137GB limit see the WD knowledgebase. Here is one description.

John, thanks for the thread! But I don't quite understand all the info that young man was discussing! Can you upgrade to a higher RPM if it is 4200rpm? Also, the memory is PC2100 (max 1GB). It will only be used for internet surfing and emailing. But I don't want to spend a lot of money if it will be very slow. Can I also get a wireless adapter for a Laptop, since this one has an Ethernet card.

    I really appreciate anyone's help!

Just get any 2.5" ATA hard drive less than 160GB and you'll be safe. Any RPM is fine, though obviously 5400rpm will make the computer more responsive than a 4200rpm drive.

You can use either a PMCIA or CardBus wireless card (fits into that slot on the side of the notebook), or a USB one (plugs into any USB port). Wireless G and N cards are available for around $50 at any electronics store.

EDIT: For RAM, it's ALWAYS cheaper to get it online (usually half as much or so). NewEgg has 1GB for about $40.

As a sidenote, if you're planning on all these upgrades, you might want to look at the final cost of it all and see how much more a brand new laptop might cost you, and whether or not all the money is worth it.

Your laptop can support any rpm PATA notebook harddrive.
The manufacturer cannot limit your laptop to only support 4200rpm drives.

Your laptop has an LBA restriction, meaning your maximum harddrive size is 137GB (formatted space would be 128gb)
So you can either buy a larger capacity drive like the Samsung HM160HC, and format it with a single 137Gb partition, or you can buy a lower capacity harddrive and not have to partition.
For a lower capacity harddrive, which will work without any problem in your laptop, I recommend:
the Samsung HM080GC, Hitachi 7K100 PATA, Seagate Momentus 7200.1 PATA.

I wrote PATA after the 7K100 and 7200.1 because they were also offered in a SATA interface, which is not compatible with your laptop.

Samsung HDDs are of good quality, sad to say that you have a limit in your selection of HDDs. But as long as you choose a good quality 2.5", things should fit right where they should be.

I was looking online for those drives and I need to know if I have to put PATA extension on the drive to find one? So I need to stay away from ATA and SATA HD? I am confused...a bit...I understand I need to keep my GB's down so I won't have to partition the HD, but I don't know enough about buying one without specific info to search for them...sorry, can you spell it out for me better....really sorry! Thanks!

The Hitachi 7K100 PATA drive you should look for is:
    HTS721010G9AT00 (100GB)
    HTS721080G9AT00 (80GB)
    HTS721060G9AT00 (60GB)

    Samsung:
    HM160HC (160gb - requires partitioning)
    HM080GC (80gb)

    Seagate:
    ST910021A (100GB)

Just look up those models, they will all work with your laptop.
Please note the 160gb model will need to be partitioned in your system.

Run a google shopping search for the model drives listed and see what you can find. Also check Ebay

I got the Samsung HM160HC for $60 total which I thought was a pretty good price. Now I need to get it in and partition it. I will have to wait until my sister-in-law returns from vacation to help me! I will go online and google how to do this procedure, since I don't want to mess anything up. Thanks for everyone's help in getting this HD!!!
