Hey guys, I bought my notebook with a 1tb hdd that came with a 16gb msata ssd for caching. However, I replaced this 1tb hdd with a ssd.

My first question is...I don't see much performance gains on the new samsung 840 ssd I bought. All the benchmarks point to my ssd having normal read/write speeds. Should I return the ssd?

Second, now that I have the SSD, what should I do with the mSATA? I don't think it makes my machine go any faster as the SSD is faster than the mSATA ssd, does it?

    Thanks!

With an SSD installed; I would not be running a 16GB mSATA too (sell it...). If you can put a 240/256GB mSATA in there - that is what I would do (if max speed and biggest capacity is needed).

As for the Samsung 840 SSD - hmmm... is it running at SATA3 speeds? I have noticed that all the (older) Samsung SSD's I have 'played' with never impressed me with their speed or responsiveness either.

    Should you return the SSD?

Well, in my case - I don't buy components for bragging rights; if they don't perform significantly above what I am currently running/replacing them for - they are returned immediately.

Try running the system without the mSATA caching SSD installed (it may be slowing down the whole setup) making sure to uninstall/disable (properly) any caching software that might depend on it first.

You may be interested (I know I would be! :) ) in trying the Corsair Neutron series SSD in your system and see if you notice a bigger difference (this SSD is currently the most consistently fast consumer SSD Anand has tested so far with the need for the least spare area - as little as 25% over-provisioned).

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck.

You can keep it for storage...

I have a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro as my main drive and a 128GB Mushkin Atlas Deluxe mSATA for additional storage... I am keeping my mp3s, documents etc. in mSATA drive.

I've got a laptop with similar specs..

samsung NP 530u with a 24gb mSATA for caching (+ a 1tb standar mechanic HDD)

Has anybody succesfully replaced the mSATA SSD included with a bigger/better one?

I've seen people doing it with different types of Lenovos, Asus etc...but I still haven't seen anything related to a samsung S5

    any info would be apreciate

Unless I'm mistaken the 24GB SSD in your Series 9 is for the ExpressCache and is a chip soldered on the mainboard. So it's not replaceable.

That's what I supposed..thanks for your help, John

PD: at least the drive can be formated, correct me if I'm wrong..the thing is I'm using linux most of the time in this laptop and there is no express cache for linux (well, there is, but it's still a facebook funded beta project) ... so no mSATA SSD in this laptop, the only option eems to be replacing the HDD and disabling the 24gb soldered cache chip...anyway, I atill can use for linux swap, hibernation etc...

    thanks again for your help
