I have a Sony Viao where the video card is shot, in reading other posts I gather that the video card itself cannot be replaced.

I want to replace the motherboard, but I am not sure of the cost of a new mother board.

Can anybody help with this info?

IMO Not worth the cost. Notebook motherboards are custom built for a specific laptop, so you can only get the replacement from Sony. I would say minimum relpacement could be around $400 - $500 and in some cases might be as high as $1000.

Yeah, it's probably not worth it. If it is over 2 years old, just get a new one.

What is the laptop and what are the specs?

is it possible to replace the motherboard for a newer generation? i have a PCG-FX150 that suffers from a couple of age problems (lacks USB2.0, only 584MB, etc) but is otherwise great. a newer motherboard would let me upgrade processors, etc

Unlikely. Laptop motherboards are highly specialized.

yes, but there are other FX series laptops with much better performance than this one, and they share cases. the question, tho, is whether that physical similarity translates into 'swappability'
