What would you recommend as a good 7200 rpm notebook drive? I had a look on Pricewatch but they had very few and I'm sure there are lots more available.

Seagate or Hitachi, though alot of people are going for the Seagate, since it's the only company with a 5 year warranty, instead of a 3 year.

I think the Segate drives generally run cooler. But the Hitachi drives run warmer, but generally perform very well. I’d recommend getting one with 16MB’s of cache.

Those don't exist... the only drives with 16MB of cashe are those Toshiba cr@pdrives

If you're getting a 7200 hd, Hitachi for value, Seagate for quality. Either way, they're good

Seagate will as mentioned run cooler/quieter and has a better warranty but will cost a bit more.

I would buy on price as they are relatively similar in performance with a Hitachi being a little better performance wise and the Seagate being a bit cooler and quieter.

Wow nobody mentioned Western Digital yet.

WD is new to the notebook harddrive field, but they've always had quality and high performance harddrives for desktops. Their Scorpio mobile harddrives aren't any different.

Go read some reviews on these drives, you'll be in for a surprise.

I have one and it is great. I've also been a fan of Western Digital from a long time ago, so yeah. :D

Never had one fail on me, runs quiet, cool, and performs great.

All that NCQ stuff for newer drives don't offer more performance benefits as it hasn't been polished up enough yet, so just go with the WD.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Edit:: Ooops, 7200rpm drives, hahaha, WD doesn't have those yet. Seagate and Hitachi, but I think the Seagates are cheaper and Hitachi's are faster, so it's up to you. I would say Seagate because of Hitachi's running a bit warmer and louder. I read the new versions have improved on these issues, but the Seagate is supposedly quieter and reliable.

I have on of the Hitachis, and it does run pretty warm and it is certainly audible if it is quiet. But even in a meeting if someone is talking, it isn't noticable, and the clicking stops after a little bit. I can't do a direct comparison, but I would say that either of these would be fine.
