I'm in the immediate market to buy an external display for my new desktop rig. Maximum price is $300 shipped, but I'd like to keep it under $250 shipped. Looking for a large display with decent contrast and color accuracy. What do you recommend?

Such a display does not exist. You will not get color accuracy at that size and price range. So I'm assuming you'll be going for sheer size.

You are going to have to stick to TN panels. When buying a TN panel I would also stick with name brand LCD's as well.

Well I don't need perfect color accuracy. Just something decent. Ok, say we went a minumum of 22".

Thanks. I've been through tiger and newegg already, and there are just too many to choose from. Hence my asking for a recommendation.

Just found this absolutely beautiful display on newegg. $50 over my max budget. I'll have to think about this one:

Don't know when it's coming state side, but the Samsung SyncMaster F2380 is one to consider. Uses the new C-PVA panel which isn't quite as good as S-PVA but is much cheaper.

+1 for Samsung F2380. It's available on Newegg.

Best measured contrast rates in this pricerange.
