    Hi,

i have just ordered a laptop and just wondered how easy it will be to upgrade the ram?

i was thinking of upgrading both sticks as they are clocked at 667mhz to ones clocked at 800mhz, plus getting one 2gig stick, leaving me with 3gig total memory.

will the extra gig + speed be worth it and noticable for what i will be using the laptop for?

also what brands should i go for, and is it easy to find compatable ones?

im quite new to modding laptops, although its very straght forward with pc's

    Cheers.

The 1520 has one stick on the base of the laptop - extremely easy to get to, the other stick is under the keyboard, not as easy but still fine for anyone that has worked on computers before.

I'm not sure if the PM965 chipset supports DDR2-800, Intel list it as supporting DDR2-667. I would say that unless you are doing really memory intensive tasks, there is little point to 3GB.

I have always used Transcend in notebooks and mainstream PCs, they are reliable and well priced.

    Hope this helps.

edit: No current notebooks support DDR2-800, so it is just a waste of money to buy fast stuff.

sorry, i ment to edit it to put that information in.
mainly games, surfing the internet and general media.
thanks for the info, atleast if i go with a upgrade i know i only have to upgrade one of the sticks.
my xp pc works perfect with 1gig of ram, as there is not alot running in the background, normaly have 650/700 free... i was just unsure on how vista is, as ive never really used it before... ill turn off most of the uneeded features anyway.

According to Gophn only laptops with DESKTOP intel processors and a few AMD equipped models will support the max speed of 800MHz RAM. Considering the OP is not among that select list it's better to save money and go for the 667 RAM.

the ram is very easy to change in one place while this is not the case with the slot under the keyboard. just replace the ram present in the easier slot with a 2gb stick and leave the other one alone

thanks nizzy, thats very helpfull, had an idea that it would be that simple, had an inspiron back from the early 90s (233mhz P1 cpu, 32meg of ram) that i upgraded to 64meg much the same way... only both rams were together on that one.
if after a few weeks of useing it i feel it would benifit from an extra gig, ill get it done.
