Going inside my laptop for the first time to upgrade from 4 gb ddr3 to 8g.
Looking at the bottom suggest to me that the correct door to remove has 4 phillips screws, one being recessed slightly. Anyone familiiar with this model?

Should I buy the memory from HP for consistancy, or go to say...Newegg for another brand? What brand should I stay away from if any?
How difficult is this task on a laptop because on my desktop it wasn't at all really. Thank for the help!

Just unscrew the 4 Phillips using the largest sized screwdriver that will fit to prevent stripping a screw.

Any DDR3 204 pin modules will work. I would stick with brand names like Corsair, Crucial, GSKill, Kingston.

Make sure when you install your RAM that you run memtest or another benchmarking test to ensure system stability. Nothing like finding a good deal on a defective product. :D

    Wait a minute - do you have a dv6t-1300 or a dv6t-3100 notebook?

Because the first generation dv6 (like the 1300) takes in DDR2, while the the third generation (like the 3100) takes in DDR3.

DDR2 is not compatible with DDR3, and DDR3 is not compatible with DDR2. Either way, replacing the RAM on HP notebooks shouldn't be too hard - it's under one of the bottom panels. Also, most brands that you will encounter should be fine in terms of compatibility -- it's better to buy from Newegg as it's much cheaper than what HP offers (for basically the same thing).

It is a laptop that I configured for my needs. The designation is correct though. dv6t-1300 as noted on bttm of laptop.

    You swapped out the MoBo?

Edit: My bad; in doing my own research (which I should've done before posting) it seems that model does indeed take DDR3 mem.
