    Hello,

I have one of the two RAM slots free in my Latitude D600. The other has a 512mb stick. Thing is that the sticker on the RAM says that it's 266Mhz whereas CPU-Z (diagnostic tool) says that it's only 133MHz!

Also, I'm thinking of buying more RAM from crucial.com and the RAM they have for sale for the D600 is 333Mhz. Would this be compatible with my 266Mhz (/ 133Mhz???) RAM in the other slot?

    Thanks!

The d600 uses PC2100 memory. The PC2700 memory on Crucial.com will probably work, but will run at PC2100 speed.

Will such 2700 RAM always run at 2100 speed on the D600 or if I just had 2700 RAM in there (as opposed to mixing 2700 and 2100 sticks) would it run at 2700 speed?

    Thanks.

266Mhz is the fastest memory can run on the D600. The only reason to get faster is if you can get it cheaper.

133MHz/266MHz or PC2100 are one and the same since the memory your laptop uses is DDR (dual data rate). As zazonz mentioned if you use memory of different speeds, the faster one will downclock to the speed of the slower memory.
Depends on what speed the motherboard can support, if it can only support upto PC2100 memory then it willl run at that speed. If the motherboard can suppport the higher speed then it will run at PC2700.

It said on the spec page for the d600 on Dell, PC2100. Don't know if there were different models that supported other speeds.

Even if it does support the 2700 RAM I'd still be mixing it with a stick of 2100, so the whole lot would run at 2100 speed as earlier posts have pointed out.

I mean I'm not going to take out the slower RAM. Swapping 1GB of RAM running (effectively) as 2100 for 512MB of 2700 would be crazy, right?

I have done a performance test on my laptop.

I ran the memory at PC2100 speeds, did 4 or 5 benchmarks, then ran it at the proper PC2700 speeds, and repeated the benches.

There was exactly a 3.4 percent performance increase.

So, don't bother upgrading the speed of your RAM, it will not be worth it.

Get another 512MB Stick of PC2100, and you'll be set! :)
