Hi guys, i have 3 laptops, and i have a few questions about their hardware..
I appreciate both, either an direct answer or preferably a direction in where should i better search and learn this sort of hardware compatibility issues.

First i have a Sony Vaio FZ31Z and a Compaq CQ61-200EP, and i'm having doubts if i can exchange the CPU from the laptops. Main reason to "tweak" my Compaq that i want to keep because of his 1366x768 screen and a G103m Nvidia.. Compaq is Socket BGA479 and Vaio is Socket P. Are they compatible? Also
2nd-Also can u guys explain me why Nvidia 8600 GS from Vaio has a better performance than G103m in Windows Experience Index? Is this accurate?
G103m has 512Mb instead of 256Mb (8600GS) and also is CUDA technology.

Third laptop i have is a HP DV9000 series, which is also a T8300 CPU motherboard (part 461069-001) and for which the Nvidia GPU (also 8600GS) or other component fried, i tried reballing the GPU and had no success, so i want to buy a new board. But I'd like to upgrade the board to another with a newer GPU with preferably 1GB or higher, and considering many people complain on the 8600 series many flaws.. Needlless to upgrade CPU or not irrelevant.

My question is, how can i check which models are compatible with shells (same board and ports layout), or, socket compatibility, and the hardest, knowing the board CPU/GPU specs? ebay has no specs information..

    Thanx!

    1) Depends on the chipset of the Compaq, if you could CPU-Z the chipset that would be helpful, most likely a GL40.

    2) G103M is pretty weak on the discreet graphics chart. 8600M GS is still a decent GPU, lines up 45x0 and 43x0 series ATI despite being 3-4 years old.

    3) The G84M GPU on the DV9000 GPU is soldered onto the motherboard, no upgrades.

Don't bother with any of that. For one, the GPU isn't upgradeable unless it resides in an MXM socket. Second, certain HP Pavilion models have Nvidia chips that were soldered using low-quality substrate. Even if you replace the motherboard, it will just be a matter of time before the substrate cracks again and you are left with a black screen.

I have a heat station, bad contacts are not the problem, i was merely trying to avoid the G86/84 GPU on upgrading the board.

The Compaq chipset is PM45 against PM965 on vaio.

Should i keep the vaio instead? i mean, it's a good laptop, with magnesium casing and a good performance, but the battery is dead and the screen is still 1280x800, also, compaq has a decimal keypad which is very useful. I still think overall the Compaq is the best option. But i welcome good opinions.

Can you people recommend on more reading about hardware compatibility?

Considering HP whitelists WLAN cards, I wouldn't be surprised at all that also included CPUs. Theoretically PM45 will accept all 1066 FSB Core 2 Duos.

Laptops with the G84M/G86M are timebombs, HP especially with those chips soldered onto the motherboard.
