My notebook came with an sd card slot that has a holder card that you can put in there when the card isn't there. Should I leave that in there or is it okay for the slot to be empty when a card isn't there?

It's really just to keep dust out of the slot (or at least off the contacts inside of it), you can leave it empty or leave it filled. I keep a SD card in it so I know where one is when/if I need it, and I keep a few utilities on it (cpuz, crystal disk info, hardware monitor, ccleaner...)

It's ok for the slot to be empty. It just helps keep out dust or whatever. It doesn't really do anything.

As they said above not really a problem if not in. But not a bad idea to leave in. And as said above buying a working one to keep there sounds helpful and useful.
