If hdparm is used (to prevent the hdd's firmware from spinning it down every few seconds), will it prevent Windows from spinning the drive down after x minutes too?

I doubt it very much. Windows can read certain instruction sets from the hard drive via firmware but not all of them. Be careful with hdparm command lines, it might cause you more harm (system file corruption) than benefit .

    cheers ...

2x on learning exactly how hdparm works BEFORE you use it. It is possible to (accidentally) disable safety power down and head park parameters with it.

    Bad. Very Very Bad.
