    hi, I have a Compaq r4000

    AMD 64 3200+
    1024 DDR pc3200 ram
    128mb ATI Radeon Xpress 200m

When I run DXdiag it says my processor is the 3200+ but it says "~1.0Ghz" at the end of it. does that mean it is only running at half the speed? Also can I swap out the card in my noteboox (R xpress 200M 128mb) for the radeon mobility X800XT?

I can barely run doom 3 on the worst settings right now and I am looking to be able to run it at medium quality on 800x600 or even 1024 x 768. Will replacing the video card will make all the difference. Can I even mod this notebook? I am looking to make it good enough to run quake 4 and doom 3 and am willing to spend 1000 doing it. Opinions?

No, you can't upgrade the video card and you won't be able to play those high end games on this machine, sorry. You'd be best off selling it and adding that cash to the $1000 you have to buy something more aligned with your needs.

FEAR will bring anything less than a desktop Radeon 9700PRO to it's knees. I have a desktop 256MB 9800XT and with max. settings the highest I can go is XGA. I'll have to try it on lower settings and a higher res.

I've yet to try it with my 256MB Mobility X700, but I'll be sure to post the results when I do!

Just ran through some of the FEAR SP demo. Plays very smoothly at XGA and med-high settings. Graphics are awesome, and I love the sound too.

Yes, I am also interested to try Quake 4 on my 256MB X700.

i play it on medium with everything enabled, i tried high but it turned into a slide show when there was a lot of action on screen. also i only play it at 1024 by 768.
