I have Toshiba satellite M 70 with 512 MB ram( one module), the other memory slot is empty. I want to upgarde the ram abit and have few Qs.

1- Can I add a 1 GB module to 2nd slot, to make a total of 1.5 GB ram( 512 MB+1 GB) or both modules must be of same capacity( 512 MB+ 512 MB)?

2- For second memeory slot, should I try to buy the same brand as previous one or it can be any brand?

    Thanks

Having previously owned a Toshiba Satellite M30, I wouldn't recommend you mis-match the RAM. If you upgrade, you'll want to either:

    512 + 512
    1GB + 1GB

but don't mix the two sizes...

    Cheers!

    1) They'll run with mixed sizes. Hell, they'll run with different speeds if you want. You get a very, very small performance boost if you're using DIMMs of the same sizes.

    2) Shouldn't matter again. This whole RAM thing is more flexible than people seem to think.

Yes, you can. The only thing you will lose is a minimal performance the dual channel combo would offer, but the intel chipsets are not that effective in utilizing that anyway.

No need to. You can buy anything that you want to, but just make sure that they are of the same bandwidth for a better performance.

Have a look at the RAM deals topic for some good deals (and instructions on how to install and burn-in your new RAM).

As long as the ram is rated to run the speed you want it to, the size and brand are basically irrelevant.

I wouldn't suggest buying ram from the guy on the corner, but any decent brand's ram will work, and since you're asking the question, I think it's safe to assume you don't really care if your latencies are not quite as tight as some others. That's the only difference in ram of the same rated speed, btw-latencies. They matter a little, but for most people it's a question of buying bragging rights rather than needing or even noticing the performance.

    Very true.
Brand doesn't really matter, just make sure the RAM you buy has a lifetime warranty.
