I was looking into several notebooks but wasn't sure about th eprocessor claims. One had a Duo core at 2 Ghz and is made for multitasking, but then I was lookiong at another with an AMD Turion 64 1.8 Ghz with more FSB and the HyperTransport and the manufacturer claimed that it was a great multitasker. Is it a multitasker when compared to something like P4 or a core duo. Also I read that the PM aren't rated th esame as desktops in terms of how the Ghz are measured is that the same wiht the Turion so that a 1.8 is equivalent to a higher one on a desktop. Hopefully my questions made sense. Oh and one final question how would a 1.8 Turion compare to a 2.0 core duo in terms of video encoding or somethign where only one core would be used.

    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

From lowlymarine's notebook FAQ, CPU comparison, rough equivalents:

    Celeron-Ms:
    C-M 1.20GHz - 2.42GHz Celeron-D
    C-M 1.30GHz - 2.60GHz C-D
    C-M 1.40GHz - 2.86GHz C-D
    C-M 1.50GHz - 2.93GHz C-D

    Ultra-low voltage Pentium-Ms:
    C-M 0.9GHz ULV - 2.0GHz Celeron-D
    P-M 1.0GHz ULV - 2.0GHz Pentium 4
    P-M 1.1GHz ULV - 2.2GHz P4
    P-M 1.2GHz ULV - 2.4GHz P4

    Alviso/Sonoma Pentium-Ms:
    P-M 1.40GHz* - 2.5GHz Pentium 4
    P-M 1.50GHz - 2.8GHz Pentium 4
    P-M 1.60GHz - 3.0GHz P4
    P-M 1.73GHz - 3.2GHz P4
    P-M 1.86GHz - 3.4GHz P4
    P-M 2.00GHz - 3.6GHz P4
    P-M 2.13GHz - 3.8GHz P4
    P-M 2.26GHz - 4.0GHz P4
*Not avaialable in an Alviso/Sonoma model; comparison uses older Banias core.

    Core Solo/Duo Pentuim-Ms:
    Core Solo 1.50GHz - 2.8GHz P4
    Core Solo 1.66GHz - 3.0GHz P4
    Core Duo 1.66GHz - 3.2GHz Pentium 4HT
    Core Duo 1.83Ghz - 3.6GHz P4HT
    Core Duo 2.00GHz - 3.8GHz P4HT
    Core Duo 2.16GHz - 4.0GHz P4HT

Clock for clock the Turion and Pentium M are about the same in power, give or take a bit.

The manufacturer is stupid, the Core Duo is MUCH better than the Turion 64 at multitasking.

Can't some video encoding programs utilize both cores?

yes some can and my 3d rendering programs can as well so I think i'm leaning toward the duo core thanks a ton

In extensive testing the Pentium M was clock for clock a far better better performer across every benchmark! Even in the most heavy dutu of tasks, the Pentium M kicked ass with the turion which is also terrible for overheating and has poor battery life!. In a test conducted that compared almost every Pentium M and Turion from 1.6-2Ghz.. the PentiumM 1.86(750) actually outperformed an overclocked 2ghz Turion!!(clocked to 2.2Ghz) Not to mention the standard Truion 2ghz. And the 2.0Ghz pentiumM TOTALLY creamed the overclocked and standard Turion 2.0ghz! The reason why they had to overclock the Turion was because it was performing pretty poorly compared to its PentiumM counterpart. And if u compared the equivelent cpus.(1.6PM-1.6T/1.8PM-1.8T), there was simnply no competition.
In one on the many tests carreid out, they setup a system that only differed in the cpu and ran the likes of DOOM3, Far Cry and so on to really test the cpu's raw power and the games ran at fewer frame rates when the turion was inside..and the graphics card was obviously unchanged.
This was the most in depth and extensive test ever to be carried out to compare the cpu's and no other test would be as thorough.
