Basically, 2nd gen is faster and better on battery. Get it unless it's obscenely more expensive than the 1st gen.

rajuj13, Pitabred has given a simple explanation, generally newer architecture is better. If you want detailed explanations then follow the links. Processor manuals can be downloaded from the links.

Yes or No answer. Is there a big difference between regular core i7 and Extreme other than the cost?

Extreme Edition has unlocked multipliers for overclocking on top of a higher TDP power threshold and higher multiple clock frequency. It is only useful if you are an enthusiast (overclocking fanatic) or a CPU powerhouse user. Otherwise, it is not worth the investment.

Laptop will be used for hardcore gaming and some school work on the side.

Also is overclocking the processor so much, is it good for computer? Or is it bad such as will it damage processor in any way?

Given your usage, a sandy bridge quad core will do nicely. Since you simply said school work i assume you won't have to crunch numbers or do intensive video editing/encoding. An i7-2630qm is more than enough in that case.

You are not going to be overclocking sandy bridge type CPUs most likely, not that you need to with mobile CPUs as its the GPU you need to worry about.

Basically if you are looking for a gaming machine you are worrying about completely the wrong component.
