Can you folks suggest anything or pinpoint the problem? It just freezes up the screen and cursor, then I have to manually restart...

    Thanks

    Bad RAM perhaps? Corrupted registry?

How often is it, and when did it start?

    need more info

is there a pattern? what are you doing when it crashes ? what are your system make/model/specs? how long has it been going on? how many times has it happened? is the computer new ? have you made any hardware or software changes recently?

It started a few days ago, and happens about once per day, usually while using browsing on Firefox, and it once happened while using MS Word.

Acer Ferrari 4005 (2.0 GHz Turion64, 1GB RAM, X700 128MB using Catalyst 6.2, upgraded to 6.3 today) that I just got in Nov 2005. I restored to factory settings about 2 weeks ago to clean up trojans/spyware. The freezing up only started a few days ago though.

I'm undervolting using RM Clock Utility and voltages that I tested prior to restoring factory settings. The freezing has so far occured only while using low CPU speeds (ie. browsing or word processing as opposed to gaming).

I haven't made any other software or hardware changes within this time period.

Sometimes instead of freezing up, it goes to a blue screen for about 1 second then restarts.

I've turn off my undervolt settings except for the max, which I raised.

I would just restore again. Sometimes tracking those problems down takes longer than just restoring. It could be anything.

you might want to look at the error reports generated automatically. in control panel > administrative tools > Event viewer. See if you can find anything comprehensible there.

Something simillar happened to me a while back, and after a couple of hours of tracking I found out that it was direct sound (directx) and my sound drivers. And did a format cause direct sound was unrepairable.

Did you check the error report. Any error that makes sense at the time of the crash/freeze

I couldn't exactly find the error reporting - I have the Windors Error Reporting service turned off (the annoying Send/ Don't Send) thing. My Event Viewer has Application, Security, System, and Antivirus.

    Under System, I've found:

"The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{7C86C94B-680B-423C-85E7-8B0C92B9D922}. The backup browser is stopping.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

"The Infrared Monitor service depends on the Terminal Services service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "

The name "WORKGROUP :1d" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address 131.104.250.245. The machine with the IP address 131.104.254.140 did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine."

There are also numerous consecutive Warning events leading up the "browser" error. The "browser error" and the "Infrared error" came up several times in the report. I've crashed about 3 times today.

If you've been undervolting too much errors occur.

I've fixed my darn bootup errors by upping the voltage closer to the default settings.

    Cheers,
