I have an old sony z whose hard drive does not work. I am thinking about buying a cheap used one to get the laptop working again. The problem is, the laptop came with win xp and no recovery disc. My roommate has a retail copy of windows xp sp x(cant remember), can I just install the windows using that disc and use the product key on the back of the laptop?

It's unlikely a OEM key will work with a retail CD, but it don't hurt to try.

I've used them no problem. You will probally have to validate over the phone. I have read where others weren't able due to too many copies on different computers, ymmv.
