There could be a few reasons, but I know a few of the causes.

    A) You partitioned the drive from something other than the original format. (Which is usually FAT32) I can't confirm this as much as I can say I've heard of it.

    B) You installed the OS and that is taking up the room.

Actually I feel like an idiot, read the question wrong... sorry bout that.

I can't be sure, there is a chance it could of been from formatting. You should check your cluster size. But I just can't imagine you losing more than 50% from that.... still possible.

Your drive may also be damaged try running a disk check on it. I know windows comes with scan disk that can be accessed in the system tools.

Was looking at the drive on newegg

"Other Thoughts: Should have done a bit of research first, then I would have realized my original WinXP install CD from 2001 doesn't support hard-drives over 174 gB. You need at least SP1 for Windows to recognize all the drive space. I just partitioned the drive to 80gB, installed WinXP then downloaded SP2, and create another partition for the other 240 gigs. I also found out if you use WinXP to turn it into a dynamic disk, then you can't use the WD software to copy the hard drive onto another HDD."

"Fantastic look at my other review how to fix this minor issue with hd or all hds for this matter alot of people are complaining about not getting the full 250 here is why the windows xp os before sp2 does not recognize it. After installing updates and service pack 2 go into disk management under admin tools in control panel go to drives storage and reallocate the black unpartioned space"

    There is 170gb unnallocated

Well ok then let me ask you a few questions.

Do you have the latest version of XP?

    If so...
Have you partitioned the drive already and simply part of it is unrecognizable because its not fully partitioned.

You should definitely state the model number and make of your notebook, brand of the drive and operating system. It will be much easier for us to diagnose your problem.

Search the WDC FAQs for 137GB.

There are answers such as this and this and plenty more.
