powerpack must have been drinking and the cops got him ;)

Are you sure your power brick is beeping, and not the system itself.

Put your ear to the powerbrick to verify that the power brick is beeping, and not the system itself.

If the system is beeping, than that could be keyword for overheating or some other problem, like keyboard error, or memory failure.

If it is the power brick, than you should replace it.
Usually when you power on a dell, it will tell you if the power brick is working or not.

    try the following.
1- remove the power adapter from the laptop and try to power from the battery
2- remove the battery and try to power up using the power adapter only.

I had a similar syndrom on an Acer laptop. The laptop was beepping. 5-10 mins afterwards the power cord took fire. Only difference the laptop was ON when the beeps started.

I you manage to turn your laptop on with either 1 or 2 you should be reassured that your laptop is fine, and either the battery, the power cord or the AC (the brick) need to be replaced.

    Edit:
Even if the laptop doesn't power up you don't need to stress yet as it cauld be a faulty ram or something.

Shut the system off, and then plug the ac power in. Than press the media direct button, and see if the system comes on.
If not, boot on battery, than go into the bios.
Than plug the ac power in while in bios, and than run the battery/ac power diagnostics, which the Bios should have.

Yes, you need a new adapter.

Don't get a universal one, Buy a Dell one instead. I tried a universal one in couple of Dell laptops and had few problems. Although the universal charger worked fine on them, their batteries refused to charge. So get a Dell genuin one.

And when brick catches on fire do not use water, I repeat do not use water to put out the fire. Have a fire extinguisher rated for electrical fires handy. Consider.
I know I am overstating but really at some point disposal and replacement is the best way to proceed.

    I forget,
before getting a new power supply try to test your laptop with a different power cord just in case that the fault is coming from the wires and not the AC adapter (brick)

The fire didn't start on the AC adapter, it started in the wire itself. And it's was just a small one. I think that there was a problem with the AC adapter that basically overheated the electic wires. The result was a shortage and a little fire. I was lucky I guess. Unplugging the wire stopped the little fire.

But thanks for the advice regarding the water.

I don't remember 100% but in my case the beep was coming from the laptop, and not from the AC adapter. There was a noise coming from the AC (not a beep, another typ of noise), I think it was generated by the electicity or someting inside the brick
