Phoenix Bios Crisis Recovery NO FLOPPY(YES)

For Notebook Users who have Phoenix Bios:

For some time now Phoenix has included the BB.bin( Boot Block ), a recovery mode for bad bios flash.

BUT.............

The tools for writing the recovery Image have required a USB Floppy, as most Notebooks lack Floppy. This is a PITA, I just could not believe that Flash Drives could not be Used.

I searched High and Low, and found much speculation, and until now the consensus seemed to be that the BB.bin just did not support Flash Drives.

Not True........

We just did not have the correct tool for writing the CRISBOOT.BIN to the Boot sector of a Flash Drive.

Phoenix has released WINCRIS.EXE Version 1.0.0.4, Sept 24 2008.

I can confirm, this tool Can and Will Correctly write to USB Flash Drives and recover the BIOS.

Extract that and add the BIOS.WPH file you wish to use into the WINCRISIS Dir. Run the Wincris.exe and chose your flash drive.

I have tested with a 512MB CF card in a Lexar Media USB 2.0 Multi-Card reader.

I will test with a 4GB USB Stick and see if I need to drop it to FAT vs Fat32 as Flash under 4GB may not be handy for some users.

I'll try to update this thread with a How-to for each flash drive I have, if you can confirm this works for you, please post your results.

Shame on NoteBook OEM's and Phoenix for not Including this Tool with EVERY Bios UPDATE.

I've seen user after user who needed this tool and had to rush off and find a USB Floppy to recover a Bad OEM Bios Flash.

Bios Updates from your OEM often contain Critical Updates for your Hardware.

Sometimes Not applying a Bios Update may shorten the life of your Notebook, it's often needed for New OS's.

Every OEM offers Bios Updates.

 

You don't know what you're missing.

VT support for Win 7 XP Mode was only one of the things Sony admits for the latest bios for my VAIO system - who knows what else they 'tweaked'?

 

I tested with a 4GB Flash drive, while the WINCRIS.EXE did format the drive, it FAILED to recover the Bios.

It seemed to format FAT16 however 4GB Partition, the limit for FAT16 should be 2GB, I think this is the trouble.

So out of the Box, I assume you will need a 2GB or less Flash Drive, but I'll need to do more testing............................

Ok, I used DD to make a Block by Block Image File of my 512MB CF Card and wrote that file back to my 4GB DataTraveler 2.0 Kingston USB Stick.

It worked, DD is a *nix tool, so one of you Windows Guru's will have to let us know how to make this work in Windows.

With the tools I posted you need to Format FAT16, this is trouble for drives greater than 2GB, so the Partition Size Hack I used with DD.

 

DD works fine on windows.

You will flash it at some point in time. Just a fact of technology! You are right in the since that is one of the riskier things to do with a computer, but if you follow instructions and backup appropriately there is little chance of problem. I've flashed at least a hundred or more without ever there being a major problem.

 

My Aspire One suddenly refused to charge its battery anymore. I called tech support, assuming a bad battery, and one of the things they told me to do before sending it back was to flash the BIOS to the latest version. I was able to do that, and the process completed successfully, but when I restarted the computer, it still did not charge the battery, but now instead of the Windows desktop I got a BSOD during the boot process. Repeatedly. And, of course, their BIOS "updater" that I would have to run to go back to the version I was previously running only works in Windows.

Instead of just replacing my battery, they now had to replace my motherboard as well.

 

have you tried to turn your computer ON without the battery?
BSOD means that Windows is not happy with something. I mean it is not a hardware problem and because of that Acer won't replace your motherboard.

Tried to use it on my 4GB flash drive. It looked as if it formatted and copied the files but when I checked, it showed the flash drive as empty

hey guys, can somebody help me to get bios.wph file from HP's BIOS package .exe in order to test this method on dead HP DV6500? I extracted it, but there weren't any .wph files.

 

Hello, I have a toshiba a210-fs3 that had a bad bios flash (overheated and shut off during flash). I have downloaded crisis recovery and put it on a usb flash drive with the toshiba bios renamed to BIOS.WPH. When I boot up the laptop while holding Fn-F, the drive blinks for a few seconds, then a long break, then blinks again, another long break, then more frequent blink/break activity but doesn't seem to do anything after more than 10 mins. What activity should I be seeing if the bios is being flashed correctly? I have tried multiple usb ports but always the same behaviour. Is there something that should come up on screen during the bios flash? I don't get any beep codes or on screen messages. I used wincris and the dos batch file in win7-x64, the batch file gave a warning in the middle about not being compatible with 64bit os but continued through. Should I try getting my hands on a USB floppy drive or is this unit finished?

Hi everyone, I recently had a BIOS update on my Lenovo Y560 fail and have tried to create a Phoenix Bios Recovery removeable USB drive repeatedly using this guide with no luck. I downloaded and extracted the crisdisk folder, downloaded the latest version of my BIOS, renamed it bios.wph, and placed it in the crisdisk folder but everytime I attempt to run WINCRIS I recieve the error message: "Warning, there are no removeable devices in the system! Please plug in the device and try again." I am trying to do this with a 2 GB USB flash drive and have also tried it with an SD card USB adapter but I always receive the same error message. What am I missing here?

This is actually the first guide I found when my BIOS flash failed, the problem I am having is that everytime I try to run the WINCRIS program with my USB flash drive plugged in I get the error message that I described in my last post. Here is exactly how I am trying to do this:

Download the .rar Phoenix Crisis file linked to in this guide

Extract "Crisdisk" folder to Desktop

Copy my BIOS file (renamed "bios.wph") to this folder

Plug in blank 2 GB USB flash drive

Open WINCRIS.exe

Everytime I do this I receive the same error message! My flash drive is working correctly and being recognized by Windows everytime so I don't understand why WINCRIS fails to recognize it. I am trying to do this on another Lenovo laptop running Windows 7 (although I don't think this should make a difference?) Any idea what I am doing wrong here?

What file system do you have set up on the USB drive?

 

You need FAT32 or FAT (for keys above 3,5Gb)

 

Hi, due to a faulty ram I had a BSOD during the Bios update on my Lenovo x61 and now isn't showing even POST, I followed this guide and others online, everything seems fine on the flash drive (formatted with FAT fs, CRD files and latest bios.wph) but when i turn on the laptop with the key combo Fn+B or Fn+R nothing happens, no beep or flashdrive led blinks, only the battery/AC/on led of the laptop.

 

I tried to run WINCRIS on Windows 7 X64 and I get the "Warning, there are no removeable devices in the system!", but I have success running it on Windows 7 X86. I made my USB with the modified BIOS on a Toshiba A205-S5804, power on the laptop using the FN + F keys and it works perfectly !!!

Hi guys, i need some help there are a few things i dont undersand, when you say to replace the bios.wph i cant find out witch of the files of my bios update is the one to replace, the bios is for a toshiba nb200 and the bios comes in a ziped file when i unzip there is more than one file and i dont know witch one to replace, and i cant find the WINCRIS.EXE Version 1.0.0.4. if some one could prepare me this in a file that i could download i would be very thankful.

I'm trying to recover my BIOS on a Toshiba A500-140.
Right now laptop is completely dead.
After reading all over I went for Crisis disk 1.0.0.4 and as running Windows 7 I run wincris.exe using compatibility check.

Fn+B does produce some result as the fan goes high and there is some blinking on my USB stick.
Sadly nothing else happens.

I´m having problems to find the correct bios.wph as Toshiba's web only offers .exe BIOS files.

I tried to use phoenix crisis recovery tool to my dell studio xps 1647 but it does not work. I am unable to access the recovery mode, there is no led on the USB flash. Please help me !

 

Recovery mode consist of no screen output and the fan running at 100% speed. I'm going to assume that recovery for a 1647 is the same as my 1564 in which case you would remove the power cable and battery, insert the usb stick, while holding down the end key on the keyboard insert the power cable and let go of the end key. Fans should kick on 100%. Now pray that it reads your usb, it should shut down by itself after it's done, try not to power it down by yourself, it can take up to 10 minutes.

You could also check the thread linked in my signature, it has some more info that might work for your 1647 too, including a wincris package.
