    Hey guys,

Looking to get a gaming laptop. Probably 15" or 17" screen. I realize 4k is a bit pointless on a smaller screen and will likely just get a regular HD 1024 display. I'm just wondering if I plug in an external monitor, can I still get 4k support? Does it depend on the laptop? I'm thinking 1060 or 1070 chipset. I have been looking at particular laptops and the specs don't seem to address this question.

    Thanks.

As long as the system has HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort/mini-DisplayPort output, an external 4K monitor will work just fine. Even integrated GPUs support that resolution.

The GPUs do support it but its up to the laptop manufacturer to ensure that the output ports I.e HDMI etc support it.. If you go for a Clevo, Alienware, Asus or MSI with 1060/70 would be very surprised if they don't support external 4k res..
