I've come to the conclusion that I need a WD Scorpio Black 320 GB HDD (BEKT) for my T61. I was thinking if I'' gain anything in partitioning the HDD so Vista gets around 80 GB and the rest is used for other stuff...

I'm thinking of Vista boot time, access to programs etc.

Yeah, partitioning is a good idea. You'll get 289.09 GB space from the HDD. (Use GParted)

Assign 89GB to vista and the rest 200GB for dumping stuff.

Technically the first partition made on a HDD which is new, (i.e. has all unallocated space) will be on the outer edge of the HDD, so you should get better performance and access times if you install Vista on the 1st partition.

You can then add 2 or 3 partitions, allocating space for your stuff, in rank of access. Since the HDD would have lower R/W rates when seeking at the inner edges of the disk.

Check out this vid, it'll help you explain that the actuator arm won't have to do much 'work' when data is on the outer edge of the HDD.
