It has 2gb of PC2-6400 in it now but the CPU is a T3200 with a bus speed of 667, so PC2-5300 ram will be OK?

I want to put 2x2gb of ram in it, does it really matter if they are not "matched pair"? They will be the same type of ram, just bought individually.

Also, CPU-Z and other types of software read the ram as being PC3-200 or something weird like that, what is that all about?

    Thanks.

Yes, no, take a screen shot?

For the most part, memory speed makes a very little difference in performance compared to absolute memory amount. On the other hand, PC5300 and PC6400 are so similar in price, some people say you might as well get PC6400. You really won't notice a difference, though.

Check out the crazy timings. That is the SPD page, the memory page only shows how much ram there is, not other info at all.

Another quick question, do I really need more than 2gb to run Vista?

I am guessing yes, although it runs surprisingly quickly with 2gb. I use XP on my desktop so this is the first time I have used Vista.

2gb is sufficient for vista but adding more ram will improve performance. Going 2-4gb is similar going from 1-2gb in XP performance wise. This is on 32bit systems mind you. 64 bit systems will benefit from even more ram

A last try at asking why cpu-z is so messed up about my ram..I don't suppose it matters, I know it's PC2-6400 cos I took it out and looked at it, lol.

Watching the screen shot, your system appears to be in good working condition. Congratulations on the successful tweaking of your system.
