I am looking at upgrading the laptop I'm going to buy from a P8400 (2.26ghz) to an P8600 (2.4ghz), but I am not sure what the curve is on performance levels for CPUs in laptops. Are the differences that noticeable for things like gaming, etc.? Thank you for the help.

Negligible differences, don't waste your money.

6% difference in CPU speed will be difficult to measure without a stopwatch.

If you have a dedicated GPU then there will be negligible difference in gaming performance (and <6% difference with integrated graphics which use the CPU more).

The only difference between the two is 140MHz worth of clock speed. As members in this thread have noted, don't bother with the upgrade.

I have a P8400 in my laptop and it is quite fast . . . it has run everything I have thrown at it so far.

It should make very little difference, but how much are you paying for it? If it is more than $30, I would not bother. If it is less than $20, I'd get the P8600.

It would cost $50, so doesn't seem to be worth it.

Thanks everyone for the help, much appreciated.
