i have been attempting to save up for a new laptop, but discovered i suck at it.
however, doing this made me realize my current laptop is just fine. however, it does need some upgrades if it is to last me another 2 years. im willing to spend a little over 400 bucks. the laptop i will be upgrading is in my sig.

    im planning on getting a:
    core 2 duo t9300
    a nine cell battery
WD scorpio black 500gb 7200 rpm

my problem is, i have some concerns.

    1)
my biggest concern is with my processor. my current cpu has a very, very loud whine. so much so that if the cpu kicks in like at all you can hear it across a quiet room. gaming you can sometimes hear it over the sounds of your own speakers.

this is the biggest reason i want to get a new laptop. if i upgrade my processor should i still have the loud whine?

additionally, concerning the processor: would buying a used one be fine? or should i go for new always?

    2) the t9300 has a fsb of 800mhz, my current t5750 has a fsb of 667 and im almost certain my laptop has 667 mhz ram in it. with the t9300 would i be able to run 800mhz ram, and if so, would it be worth the upgrade to get the 800mhz ram?

PS: I have one more question. i need to replace my dvd drive, and i have found a few on ebay. however, i was wondering if there are any blueray drives that are compatible with my laptop. i dont know if certain laptops can only use certain drives or if they are almost all compatible like a desktop dvd drive

Sounds like your heatsink fan assembly is failing and/or clogged with dust. Get a small can of compressor air and see if $2.99 fixes it. Otherwise just open up the case and replace the fan with a cheap Chinese part from Ebay.

As for you other questions, if you haven't already, look at the Gateway forum and see if anyone else has put in a T9300/blu-ray.

na, its not just clogged. i do that every two months or so. it doesnt help. its had the whine as long as ive had it. plus, i need a new cpu anyway. this one is quite slow.

someone has replaced thiers with a t9300, however, it is a different model (same hardware though, its the m-6850fx. just a re-branding with different colors basically)

the blueray i havent heard though.

I agree about the T9300, should be good to go there. Being the pragmatist, was the T5750 always slow or is your software more demanding now?

I'll keep an eye out on the blu-ray. What could you get for the laptop? I was thinking $400 +whatever (guessing $230/300) you might be able to get a decent laptop on sale or used.

software more demanding. i run through a course in 3ds max and character modeling/animation takes way more processor power for rendering than i have. a desktop would be best, but i need this to take to classes.

im meaning 400 max. and that is with the cpu, hard drive, battery, and new dvd or blue ray drive (my current one does not write anymore for some reason)

how would i be able to test if it is the fan? also, the whine is not too loud, but noticable if your within like 10 feet of my laptop in a quiet room. i would say 45 - 50 db when running at full speed
