Hiyas. First off, I have an inspiron 1520 with a Pioneer DVD+-RW DR-K17Y.
The drivers are all up to date. Everything has been going fine until yesterday when i was using dvd decrypter to copy a dvd.

An error occured during the copy and I couldn't eject my disk. It started making strange noises so i forced the computer to shut down.
I started up the computer and found that my optical drive will no longer read any kind of dvd. It will read cds.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers with no luck. I don't know what to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    My warranty hasn't expired yet.
If i can't fix this, is there anyway dell could send me a replacement drive?
Or will i have to send them my entire laptop?

    My specs are:
    Inspiron 1520 / Windows XP / Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz / 8600m gt
2 Gigs of ram / 120 GB Hard Drive

Don't toy with it unless you're going to have to send the whole laptop in.
If they'll send you a replacement optical drive then just do that ;)

    did you try un-installing decrypter??

then deleting the drivers and rebooting?

I doubt it's that serious a problem. Let's try a few more things first- b4 you try to get a new one........

pls post back and/or pm me. I've used dvd decrypter quite a bit w/ no problem, though I recently upgraded to the newer version "DVD Fab HD Decrypter". It works great and works w/ high def movies, since DVD Decrypter was last updated in 2005.

No, I didn't try reinstalling dvd decrypter.
I've never tried the Dvd Fab Hd Decrypter, I'll have to give that a shot.

Well, i contacted Dell technical support and they had me do some tests.
During the Pre-Boot Assessment Test, the dvd drive failed to pass.
So, Dell is sending me a new drive.

I'll try to be a bit more careful with this one. lol
    Thanks for your responses all

Don't think like that! Tell them to build it a little better! :D :)
