Ok this thread pertains to Nvidia stupidity in their new Windows 7 Driver release.
    Specifically 187.XX
I don't know about discrete cards but this issue is reproducible in Nvidia Integrated Graphics like 9100M G.
    Firstly 9100M G has 3 modes

    Default 169MHZ
    2D Mode 275MHZ
    3D Mode 450MHZ

However the new Nvidia Drivers 187.XX forces 2D Mode and 3D Mode in Windows 7 Aero Interface, which is completely stupid when the 186.XX drivers that toggle between Default and 2D Mode can handle Windows 7 Aero as well.
3D Mode should only be activated in GAMES not DESKTOP!

As a result the GPU experience higher temperature for no good reason.

    Work Around:
Download driver not affected by Nvidia Stupidity :186.91.
    Uninstall Nvidia Stupidity Driver 187.XX.
Use CCleaner to remove all traces of Nvidia Stupidity in Windows Registry (otherwise aero will not start)
    Install Driver Version 186.91.

You can download driver version 186.91 from laptopvideo2go.
It is the most updated driver without Nvidia stupidity.

Sorry if I sounded rude but because of this Nvidia wasted my time.

Ya, sounds about right. My 8400M GS before it killed itself always used to run at full-bore High Performance mode whenever I would connect it to my external monitor, drove me nuts. Had to use Rivatuner to force it to stay in 2D mode. Idiot Nvidia.
