    Hey guys,

I'm having an issue with my Compaq C714NR. Speedfan shows that my notebook has been averaging these temperatures:

    HD0: 37C
    Temp1: 55C
    Core0: 39C
    Core1: 37C

If Temp1 is my overall CPU, then should I be worried about the fact that Speedfan shows fiery symbol next to it?

If my notebook is getting hot, would you guys recommend that I go and buy a notebook cooler? I've noticed my Compaq's fans and vents have been positioned so that the air gets pushed out from the vent located on the left side instead of toward the table top. I've been considering the quad-cooler for now. Any suggestions?

BTW....I'm not very saavy with computers, so I'm entirely clueless as to what values I should put for Speedfan or for Notebook Hardware Control for controlling fan speed. Anyone wanna give me some advice???

no, you don´t have to worry, the temps are still quite low.

The "fiery" symbol just means that the temp has just passed the standard setting of 50°C. This is not a temperature you should be worried about.

If you want to use speedfan you should figure what the max temperatures for your cpu, gpu and hdd are, and configure the settings for triggering these symbols.

Mind walking me through on this one? I am a dummy on this and don't wish to mess with anything...

Also, I'm planning on upgrading the RAM and running Guild Wars on it. Any chance you could help me in this area???

well, i´m in a kind of hurry cause i gotta meet my girlfriend in about an hour.

i can´t help with the temps right now, but for upgrading and doing some repair on your laptop this might come handy :

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01301275.pdf

its the HP G7000 Notebook PC and Compaq Presario C700 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide

in there is a section removal and replacement procedures with the subcategory component replacement procedures. In there you will find how to upgrade the ram yourself.

As for the temps , i can´t help you right now, i´ll be back in two days, but i guess someone else her at this board will konw.

    happy new year

If it seems hotter than normal. Go buy a can of compressed air and blow out the vents of your notebook. You can get a four pack of them at Target for $10. That usually does the trick.

Sure, but what I'm rather concerned about is the likelihood of the overall temperature increasing dramatically when I start playing GWs...

Anyone wanna help me set up speedfan??? I'm rather lost... :(

Check out the circuit city website and do a search for notebook cooling fans. They are basically a little platform with two fans built into it which is powered by plugging it into your notebooks USB plug. I've got one for my laptop and it does make a pretty big difference. They start around $20 and go up from there.

I had a compaq with serious heating problems, and I have read in forums that lower end market compaqs, this was a common problem.

My only way to fix it was to buy a cooling pad as Stafphoto mentioned. You can get fancy neon lit ones for about $50, but I purchased one from an asian discount shop for $19. It had three cooling pads and an inbuilt 4 usb hub.
I did me fine for about 2 years.
