    USB headphone adapter?

You could try a USB soundard - X-Fi Go from Creative is one.

However, I don't think that will solve your problem.

You say you can record audio but don't get the graph in Audacity?
In this case it would be software, not hardware.

    Hey chato,

What exactly are you recording and where are you inputting from? Voice or instrument? Are you using the local Dell mic, or external; or did you plug an instrument in?

I've been using Audacity for some time too. First have you tried to click the little microphone symbol (seen below) and try "Monitor Input." Try doing that and see if it works.

The last time I recorded something, I was recording guitar through my Korg Toneworks AX3000G multi-effects pedal. I could clearly hear and monitor the output but only during recording and it was delayed. If you really can't hear anything while recording, try messing around with the settings in Edit/Preferences...under Playback and Recording. Make sure you are playing back with the right device (whether its headphones or speakers). You can also try checking "Software Playthrough" and see if that works.
