I decided to backup my g73 using windows backup. And since i've barely filled up this hard drive i decided to store it in but can't get past in selecting a drive or cd to back up to because windows tells me my 3tb is corrupted. Which i don't get, because i've only used it 6 times.

aaand if it helps, i accidentally hit my drive when it's on the floor near my feet. and it only fell twice since the day i got it. :p

Refurbished Hard Drive? Now that is a scary thought.

it only took falling one time for one of my drives to break - one of the read/write heads came off.

Your drive is screwed. If you're an honest person, you will go out and buy a new one, because it was user error / accidental damage that caused the malfunction.

Depends on if the drive was subjected to a load less than spec shock. I mean, I've had hard drives knocked over before and failed a couple years later, but does this mean it was my fault or the drives? I'd sent it in for RMA and let them decide.

When you dropped the drive was it actively reading/writing data? Yeesh but I would stay away from refurbished hard drives, one of the few refurbished things I will not buy.

i put my hard drive on the floor, standing position. it's only a little shock imo, does it really do that kind of damage?

well, lesson learned. no refurb drives for me too.

    o.t:
what other refurbs should i not buy? :p

If you're just using it as an external and the price is right, I wouldn't have much of an issue buying refurbished. Just run a good chkdsk on it when you first get it and if there are issues, return it.

That being said, I had an old 250gb external that my cat knocked onto the floor while it was in use and it still works fine about a year later. I bumped my old laptop into something while it was on and the drive in it died, though. It's completely hit or miss whether something will damage the drive or not, it seems.

Meh. I don't really see a problem buying a refurbished hard drive.

Every hard drive you ever buy *WILL* eventually fail - it is just a question of when that failure will happen. It could fail on day 1 once you pull it out of the box, or it could last 10 years before it fails. This is true for any hard drive (brand new, refurbished, or used).

*WHEN* your hard drive eventually fails, it doesn't matter whether you bought it new, refurb, or used. The only thing that matters is warranty, and how good your backups are.

think of dual drive enclosures that do raid 1 in hardware.

All of my machines except for the HP laptop have their drives running in raid 1.

    even the external backup volumes

A 3TB drive is a desktop drive, generally designed for minimal to no shock, ESPECIALLY while running. <10G in general, which is very easy to do.

If you want something that can stand up to being moved around, don't get the big cheap externals. Get a 2.5" drive, even if it's more expensive per GB.

This external drive still works great. i can still transfer files in and out of it.

i did a check disk which led to an error. :p so i tried the checkdisk program, there were a few " Insufficient disk space to correct errors". weird. :|

although when i checked some of my files, photos in particular, the quality was ruined :p half pictures are gray, some distorted. really weird :|

Depending on the utility you're using to scan the drive, the error: "Insufficient disk space to correct errors" could mean a couple of things. Among them are:

    a) that there are so many hard sector errors that the spare sector table is 100% used up

    b) there are so many mft/directory errors that the copies of 'recovered files' are taking up 100% of available space on the drive

in either case, the drive is most likely toast. Get your data off the best way you can, try to return the drive, and don't buy any more reconditioned high-precision equipment like disk drives.

what if i reformatted the drive? will it work like new? :p i'm trying it now, but it sure is taking it's time :p

this is just ridonkulous. :| i've been reformatting for the past 30 minutes and not even a pinch of green is seen on the progress bar.

are there any freeware programs that are good in reformatting external drives?
