This thread will begin discussing the implications of the new Santa Rosa Refresh targeted to be released in January 2008.

Personally I have a pretty old lappy and it's been good, but I am either going to get a current santa rosa (G1s) or wait for the new ones to be released. Please discuss all the pros and cons to this change for Intel based laptops!

    Enjoy!

Nice that 45nm tech is coming to the mobile community, but this is the desktop section.

I'll assume that the mobile and desktop versions are both similar other than power saving features, for the sake of discussing here anyway haha.

Penryn should have higher clock speeds for one. Also they are expected to run cooler too. That's two huge bonuses right there.

Yup, can't beat running cooler and cosuming less power: for both desktops and laptops.

I didn't even know Santa Rosa was available on desktops.

    I don't think it is :)

I'm not sure of the Intel technical details, but the new chip codename is Penryn and it will be for both laptops and desktops. The Santa Rosa, I'm pretty sure, is laptop only so there is some fusion between Santa Rosa and Penryn (two different features involved that allow them to combine?). Santa Rosa allows for huge energy savings so there isn't as much demand for it on a desktop.
