    Hi

    Im new to all this but in need of some help. I recently bought a new hard drive the Hitachi Travelstar 7k200 SATA 7200rpm with 200 GB 2.5" (I bought it based on the reviews I read here and on some other sites).

    I installed it on my laptop (Fujitsu S Series S7020 running Windows XP Service Pack 3) but every time I boot up I get an "Error Loading Operating System."

    I first tried Acronis True Image 11 to Clone my old hard drive (Samsung SpinPoint SATA 60 GB 2.5") to the new one. But got the same error. From what I've read in these forums it's supposed to be that easy, you clone the hard drive them put it in and boot up (according to the Acronis site too).

    I then tried Cloning from the True Image boot rescue CD and nothing. I then tried the other Acronis program Easy Migrate from the boot rescue Cd and still nothing. Always get the same "Error Loading Operating System."

    The really annoying thing is that in the BIOS it recognizes that the Hitachi is in my laptop but then cant past the error screen. I have wiped and formatted the new hard drive then cloned my old hard drive again. Also when I connect it via USB I can see that everything is cloned properly (at least according to size etc).

    Really don't know what I'm doing wrong here. But it is becoming really annoying switching back and forth between the two hard drives just to get the same error message. When I put in my old hard drive everything boots just fine.

    Some thing I should probably point out is that I do NOT have the original Windows CDs etc. No idea where they are I moved to a while back so they are probably in a box some where.

    I have spent days searching the internet and forums for a solution but cant find one (or at least one that works) So I would be really grateful for any help, so if anyone has any suggestions I'm willing to try it.

    I only have a few days left on the return policy and I got a lot of college fees to pay off so €120 is expensive for me, I guess if I can't get it to work it will have to go back.

    Thanks in advance :confused: :)

    If you make a boot CD like hiren's and make a windows environment,can you use the disk like normal?

    you try looking for your windows XP CD and re-instal windows. And yes as jin mentioned the SATA Drivers might be the problem

    Go into your bios, and set the boot priority to boot to the harddrive. Set the harddrive as the first boot device. That should solve the problem. Sometimes the system will automatically try and boot from the cd first, and then ping too long, causing the harddrive not to be recognized.

    Good luck, that should work,

    As for the SATA drivers, there here. Unzip them. Select "multi driver folder" in the driver area of nlite. Select Them all.
    Also, don't worry about that link, I uploaded it myself.

    I'm surprised that the S7020 uses SATA and not PATA. Anyway, if the new HDD will fit then it is not an issue.

    I wonder if you are falling foul of LBA and the 137GB limit. Do you have only one partition on the existing HDD and did you let Acronis automatically expand it to fill the 200GB? If so, do a manual cloning with the partition smaller than 137GB. This might not fix the problem but it is worth trying.

    Hey everyone

    First off Wow! Thanks for the quick responses. When I put this up I didnt think id get a reply for a few days! So thank you I really appreciate it.

    First @ K-Tron
    I entered BIOS and set the Boot Priority to the Hitachi, saved then restarted but still the same error when it boots up.
    Tried it also with Boot Drive (F12) and booted from Hard Drive.
    Also when I hit ESC to see the Diagnostics screen when it boots everything seems to load up fine everything is "passed" and it even says "Fixed Disk 0: Hitachi HTS722020K9SA00." Dont know if that is important but just wanted to put it out there.

    @J Ratsey
    I was surprised too but it does. Also not too sure about the 137 limit. Because in BIOS it recognises the new drive and and lists its capactiy at a full 200GB (also when I connect it via USB). So Im not sure if that is an issue but figured that because its listed it is not. Or is that maybe still a problem?
    I have two partitions on the old drive ( c drive and backup d) which I cloned onto the new one which now also has the same partitions. Was a bit reluctant to do a manual clone based on the acronis warning messages but I will give it a shot.

    @jin07 & Thomas
    Thanks for the new drives (and I trust your upload!) I put them into nlite and burnt it to a cd. I will have to do a free install of Windows from there right? But what happens to the cloned hard drive? Will it wipe the clone? Or just replace the old windows files? :confused:

    I have also created a boot cd and have tried the repair console on it. Rebooted and nothing still. Ill try a windows environment.

    Just one question the fact that the Hard Drive is recognised in BIOS means that it is not damaged etc. Or could that be a problem? :confused:

    And again thanks for all your help.

    It is possible that the BIOS could read the HDD type, etc., from the HDD firmware although the HDD itself has a problem. However, the fact that you have been able to write to the HDD when it is in the external enclosure suggests that it is very healthy. You can confirm this by downloading and running the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test. I suggest that you use the CD version and make a bootable CD.
