I'm hoping to get some help here.

    I bought a SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 HN-M750MBB 750GB 5400 RPM 8MB HD to replace a 120GB Toshiba HD that came with my HP dv9429us.

The Toshiba is actually a slave drive in the 2nd HD bay of the dv9429us.

After I copied my files over to the Samsung drive without a problem and place it in the 2nd HD bay. My computer would boot up excruciatingly slow.

It would get the Window splash screen and then hang.

I know it isn't the Samsung drive since it was recognized in an external enclosure without any problem.

If anyone can offer suggestions, I'd be grateful.

After you copied the files over?

Nevertheless, checked the BIOS to see if the HDD config. was in IDE/Compatible Mode? If it was in IDE, switch to AHCI Mode and see what happens.

I've looked at my BIOS settings and there's no option to enable or disable AHCI mode.

The Samsung drive can be detected when it's in an external enclosure without any problems but the moment I put it in the secondary HD bay, windows slows to a snail pace. I am able to log in after 10 min wait but then the secondary HD isn't even detected in disk managements.

The interesting thing is that, if I clone my main HD to the Samsung drive, I could boot off the Samsung drive but boot time is noticeably slower than usual...

This is a really weird problem...

Have you tried a clean install of windows on the 750 by doing a full format and install?

Slickdude, I want to use it as a secondary non OS drive in the 2nd HD bay of my laptop but for some reason Windows 7 won't recognize it as a secondary non OS drive in the 2nd HD bay.

When it's in an enclosure or functioning as a boot drive in the 1st HD bay, it works..

The 2nd HD bay recognized all the other HD I've tried it in..

ok, so you want to use the 750 as a storage drive.

Can you see the 750 drive in your bios?

If you can, boot from the 120...Are you able to see the drive in windows disk management? And if you are able to, can you do a format and assign a drive letter to your 750gig drive?

I can see the drive in the Boot order option.

When I boot of the other HD and have the 750 as the storage drive, it takes forever to go from POST to splash screen to sign on to usable desktop.

The 750 drive doesn't appear in disk management.

I almost want to say that my mb is SATA 1 and can't downgrade the SATA II speed so it's spazzing out. I've read some other users had that problem but on different drives.

I'll look into that solution before going with the reformat.

Ok so I got the problem fixed now.

It appears that the main hd bay in my laptop is capable of supporting SATA 3Gbits/sec so the 750 drive works fine as a boot drive.

The secondary hd bay only supports SATA 1.5Gbits/sec, which was why the whole system was locking up when I put in the newer drive there.

The solution to the problem was to force the newer drive to run at SATA 1.5Gbits/sec. Since there were no jumper setting for the Samsung 750 drive, I have to use a diagnostic software to limit the speed.

Once I force it to run at the slower speed, old and new hard drives played nicely now.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to to possible solutions.
