    Hi guys~
    Just like to ask~

A normal -ve or +ve DVD has 4.7GB written on top of it~

    However, when I use NERO v6.0;
    - I clicked 'create Data DVD'

and moved my 4.58GB to be burnt into the DVD
However it stated on the Nero that the 4.7GB dvd i just popped in has 4.5GB free space. Why is this so? I know that we usually dont get the FULL 4.7GB but then loss of 2GB is actually quite a lot :(

Or is it because of my nero version?
That im supposed to be using Nero v7.0 instead? (purchase)

A full blank single layer DVD is about 4.3GB and change in actual bytes. Because 1024 bytes makes a kilobyte the math gets screwy. There is nothing wrong with Nero, it is a marketing ploy. You are losing about 300MB. Nero 7 is still a little buggy in my opinion and doesn't offer much more than version six so for the time being I wouldn't upgrade. You may be able to upgrade to a higher version of six if your key allows.

Oh, I upgraded it to Nero 6.6

Well, it states in the DVD

    CyberDVD
    DVD-R 8X
    4.7GB / 120min

    DVD-R
    R5.7
    Certified by Imation

So yeah, was thinking that it SHOULD be 4.7Gb instead of 4.5Gb/4.3Gb~
Or is it because of the CD brand that is not good?

As zazonz explained, the problem/trick is with defining what a GB is. Like with HDDs that say something on the label but in windows are actually smaller

A GB as used on the label is 10^9 Bytes, not 1024^3 as the case should be.

    SO 4.7 * 10^9 / 1024^3 = 4.377 GB

So 4.377 GB is the actual size. And this applies for ANY brand

1000<1024 It's pretty weak in my mind, but that's the case.
