I am not very tech savy in regards to computers. My acer aspire one AO756 will periodically lag / freeze when I try to move the cursor which is annoying.

Prob due to having many tabs open with a few programs running.

I want to maximize the speed and performance of my laptop.

I am thinking I need to improve the RAM, install a SDD, ect.

    Would love some suggestions!

Upgrading to a SSD might help it a bit, though that Celeron CPU will still keep the netbook from setting any performance records. Brands I'd check out include Corsair, Crucial, Plextor, Intel, or Samsung; avoid OCZ like the Plague, no matter how cheap they may be.

RAM is cheap as dirt; you can pick up a 4GB stick for about ~$15 these days. If you buy some, make sure to buy 204-pin, DDR3 1333MHz RAM (the rest of the numbers are meaningless, as far as you'll be concerned).

Is there anything else I can do to make the computer more faster?

Would this model AspireOne be able to handle / access 8GB RAM or would I just be best served with the 4GB RAM with the atom processor?

Well, if it's Atom, that's it. That will be your bottleneck (even with a SSD). I was under the assumption that it was a Celeron (according to a BestBuy listing I Googled for earlier).

Ok nm I just checked and its a Intel Celeron CPU 877 1.40GHz

So it will be worth it and this can handle the 8GB RAM upgrade?

Seems like this being a x64 Celeron cpu, it should be able to access at least 8GB RAM.

The problem might be the netbook's BIOS (possibly) limiting the amount of RAM the system can handle.

The only way to know for sure is to try.

    Good luck.

Your computer randomly locking up is probably the drive or the CPU just not having enough horsepower. An SSD may speed things up, RAM will not (RAM has nothing to do with boot up speed, only how much you can multi-task) and hence 8 GB of RAM is a real waste of money IMO.

I am not talking about boot up speeds when I mentioned slight lag.

I get some lag when I have alot of tabs open with a few programs running.

You can run a couple of programs with 2GB (I'm guessing that's your default amount of RAM), and a bunch of stuff with 4GB (bunch o'Internet tabs Office, Solitaire, normal stuff). It probably really is the Celeron that's holding you back.

I mean, you could try the SSD (I'd recommend one) or 8GB of RAM (though I can't even fill up 8GB of RAM on a daily basis), but if it ends up that the CPU is your bottleneck, you'll have to move up to a more powerful computer (an i3 will do wonders compared to the Celeron). If you do that, you can transfer the SSD and 8GB of RAM to the new one.

I just want a small light weight nice semi fast netbook for travel.

I will get the 8GB RAM first and see if my netbook is lag free / very responsive all the time. It isnt that bad right now but it occurs every now and again.

I will be getting a 13" MBP very soon for my normal daily use thank God.

13" MBP is overpriced for what it is. There are better alternatives to it that are less expensive, such as the Thinkpad X230.

The 8GB RAM should speedup your workflow - the SSD may also minimize the lags - but increasing the RAM is the best way to solve those issues imo.

    Good luck.

Just went and got a 4GB RAM upgrade.

This is much more responsive and havent had a lag yet.

I am pretty sure was mostly to do with the RAM.

I was using almost all of the 2GB RAM just for basic stuff.

The 4GB RAM ugrade has made a significant difference.
