I have seen a few threads scattered about, talking about what headphones to get, what external sound card to get, ect ect.

My answer to those seeking really high end audio is audio technia A700's but thats not a cheap solution and overkill for the average user, also driving them from the soundcard in a notebook is probably a waist.

This recomendation however is for everybody that wants good sound, cheap, good for music, great for games.

Plantronics DSP500's - I own them and raved about them over and over again when I got them on sale for 60$ I belive it was at newegg, they have the most bass of any headset I have ever seen, but good SQ. I used them for my desktop but used to tell people "hey if you have a notebook these are great because"... because they run via USB port and have there own soundcard built in. Its a really nice quality one at that I may add. So this means your crappy onboard is not an issue, it even means you dont need a soundcard.

They are not only headphones but a headset, with a retractable super high quality microphone. Plantronics has done nothing but make headsets for over a decade and they are still going strong so you know they know what there doing.

Now you can use all the important voice chat features in games, or use them for broadband phone services or chat services.

I suppose I should have recomended them earlier, but what made me suddenly bring it up out of the blue??

I was going on the plantronics page to see if they have vista x64 drivers because my logitec microphone doesnt work well with shadowrun, and right there on there home page are the DSP500's that I bought for 60$ (on sale) now on clearance for 25$!!!!

seriously anybody that needs a gaming headset get this, great quality, more comfortable than my A700's (and those are hard to beat) and the best bass ever.

The mic is so high quality on these I used to wear my A700s on my ears and have these around my neck just so I could use the mic.

Built in mic silence and stuff too wich is important for shadowrun because that lame game has no push to talk button so your mic is always on.

I hope atleast one person can take advantage of this and get a great deal and be happy. 25$ is not alot to put on the line and I feel that these are worth so much more.

Oh and some cool hints, I originally got these because I needed a headset for teamspeak/ventrillo. Becasue they run on there own sound card thats built in it leaves your other sound card free to do things. I noticed when I was a world of warcraft player that the game music and all the sound effects made it very hard to hear people over teamspeak/vent, these were the perfect solution to the problem. You can manually set vent/teamspeak to use the DSP500 as the sound out and sound in, and have your game use your other soundcard making it so you can have all the game sounds on your normal speakers (I have a 5.1 surround setup at home) but then wear the headset and have only the voice program on it making it nice and clear, and giving you the mic right there to talk into.

It worked perfectly and infact I dont think I can ever use vent/teamspeak any other way because it was much better this way.

Read around the reason they droped from the going 60-80$ price is because they were finaly discontinued for a newer model. This is a good oportunity to take advantage of.

I as unable to find firmware for vista x64 tho on there site, but via google I can confirm people have the old software/drivers working fine on Vista x86.

I will when I get off work today install them on Vista Ultimate x64 and let everybody know if they work correctly.

Well I coudlnt get them working right with Vista Ultimate x64, not sure what the deal is, as im having the same issue with my microphone built into my webcam that has offical vista x64 drivers so it may be a problem on my side and not the headphones.

However to be safe id only buy these if your an XP or lower user, Vista is just abit too iffy when it comes to usb hardware (ateast x64)

I need to do one more test (boot into xp) and see if my headphones are actually in working order phisically before I make the final call.
