Yes - you can upgrade your optical drive. You just need to first buy a slim DVD burner (try newegg).

On the bottom of your notebook, under the optical drive, there are one or two screws - take these out, then slide the drive out. Stick the new one in, and put back the screws. You may have to swap benzels on the drives, if they are different.

I'd recommend the NEC 6650 sold on NewEgg. It is a very good burner. Plus I think HP uses NEC drives.

That's a good drive, the NEC. Also check out some Sony drives, I've never encountered a problem with them.

Zazonz - HP uses Toshiba optical drives - and let me tell you, the are quite terrible. No burning problems, but very noisy, too much vibration.

I worked on a HP not too long ago and it used a NEC drive, but was not a v2000z. They often change manufacturers.

Yeah, I think they change...can't get all their drives from the same place. The last dv1000 and zv series I worked on used Toshibas...NEC is much better.

You won't have any problems with the slave/master issue - however, before you buy the drive, make sure that you can remove the benzel on the drive you currently have in your notebook. It should come off. Here is a review that illustrates how to take the drive out. The benzel is different than a standard one, so you will have to put the benzel on the new drive. Make sure you can remove the benzel!
