I´m looking for the most quiet harddrive I can find for my Dell M65, minimum 250GB - I´ve been listening to WD Scorpio on a Lenovo T61, in it´s probably the most quiet I have heard, but if you have any other recommendations, please let me know.

    WD Scorpio:

    Thanks

Personally I own a WD Scorpio and despite it being mentioned as the "quietest" drive, it's really not. It's definitely audible with random clicking sounds even on idle which I find annoying. Believe me I've owned Hitachi's 7K100s and 7k200s as well as Seagate Momentus's, which are considered as noisy drives, and I found that the Scorpio annoyed me the most. Don't get me wrong, it's not incredibly loud though. I have already swapped two different Scorpio drives thinking that the first one was a defect, but it's the same result.

I would actually recommend Samsung instead, I believe their drives would probably be quieter of the bunch. Seagate may be worth a look at.

My Scorpio doesnt click, ive heard it click a few times randomly but it doesnt bother me.

The worlds quitest HD would be a SSD except it doesnt come in 250gb and costs an arm and a leg

I have a WD 320 which makes annoying low volume noises at random. Louder than the Hitachis I've owned. I just answered a post in another thread in which someone complained about loud clicking from the Samsungs. Random posts here and elsewhere complain about Samsungs clicking.

Yes, the recent WDs are very quiet. Fujitsu HDDs have always been relatively cool and quiet but slightly behind the leaders for performance.

I had a momentus 5400.2 and it was really quiet. I tried a Hitachi 7k200 and it was incredibly loud... almost unbearable. Than I tried a Momentus 7200.2, and although louder than the 5400.2, it was still very quiet.

I have a seagate 7200rpm in mine for a year now and it's so quiet I don't even no it's there. Very impressed with it. Definately quieter than the Hitachi I took out.

What flipfire says is true. Every hard drive clicks from time to time; it's part of how they operate. In truth though, I own 2 320GB Scorpio Blue HDs and haven't had a problem with either of them in terms of noise levels or anything.

I would prefer Seagate HDDs in terms of noiselessness, I have always been using there HDD not that I'm a fan or anything but because I didn't have any noise issues..

Wow. There are some sensitive ears in this thread. I can easily fall asleep through my Seagate ES.2 clicking away from seeding and leeching torrents.

Well, I returned the Scorpio and will now just wait for SSD to be cheaper, that's the only way for me...

actually, they do come in 250gb :) useful ones around 745$, so yes, it's half an arm and a leg. but for the gain in performance, it's acceptable.

one thing i've noted: when you have completely silent chip-only systems (pc's notebooks), you start notising a lot more chipnoise. and that funky "noise when you move the mouse" and similar stuff. tiny, penetrating noises. and battery when fully loaded makes noise when still plugged in. loud enough to awake me at night :(

I've just replaced my WD5000BEVT with the Hitachi 500.B. The noise when the Hitachi's head is accessing the HDD is more noticeable but, with both HDDs are only audible in a quiet room.

I have a 2 year old seagate momentus 100 GB 5400.3 and it's VERY quiet. To hear the platters spinning you would have to literally put your ear on the notebook's chassis. otherwise, you can only hear it when it's VERY busy.

As for the clicking while idling issue, i just leave HD Tune running in the background, which completely solves the issue.
