Title says it all I am willing to chip in to the guy who writes the program.

I am sure many people would either

    A. Chip in and make it a big pot

    B. Pay and buy it after your done

There is already code to look @ and learn how it works. So no excuses.

If this doesn't belong here then meh but i did not know where else to put it....

    why not? :p

Because people want to OC. But I don't think its going to happen for the i7.

The desktop i7 could be overclocked with setFSB ;)

I am waiting to see about a Pin mod as well

I'd pay a nice sum of money to anyone who can get my M860ETU to overclock my QX9300 by raising the multiplier.

If the BIOS doesn't allow for overclocking, it can't be done. I also read that pin modding wouldn't work, at it'll still be forced into the lowest multi.

Either way, I would think someone would have tried this by now for the i7.

My best guess is this bios sees the cpu ID string and goes "hey your fsb is this. Your telling me its this though and not this one", then forces the lower multi. Would be a "feature" for Intel to use to force people to upgrade the mobile cpu instead of a pin mod to make it faster.

    Ummm yes it can

M17x uses bclk to pverclock the 920xm just like in desktops so that tells be the chip can have data altered

Also has been success with grub and other methods

My clevo can be overclocked by the BCLK to .. It is a matter or creating a program ;)

The Asus G73 uses their twin turbo gear which is a fancy SetFSB. This can be easily done by the right person. It will also help out many users :) ( though few will truely be able to enjoy it since the TDP will dramatically rise

Also you misread the post. You said they could not be overclocked, I was saying the Mobile i7 lineup could be overclocked and the M17x showed that by letting us know the BCLK could be adjusted.

I know the alienware does to.... It is the simple fact that example opens up a whole world for overclockers :D

tell that to the Sager 8662 owners with PLL mods that are running @ 3.0 ghz

I thought Sager locked the BIOS so overclocking the CPu wasn't possible.

In the BIOS yes, but that is why i want the program :)

At a hardware level its possible but just not the OS level yet

I still think it's going to be forced into the lowest multiplier, but good luck I suppose.

    So what ?

Even @ the lowest multi its fine ;)

    %multi% X BCLK = xx.xx ghz

i dont want to change my multipliers I will be overclocking the FSB essentually. On non-extreme CPU's the actual multiplier selection is locked at a hardware level.

    Wanna keep going ? :p

Meh, even if someone actually gets this to work, which I doubt, it might not be a good idea. I remember Vicious saying this too, but if you increase the blk just a bit when the turbo boost kicks in, the CPU will go to really high mhz and possibly crash.

Although I know on the desktop CPU's the turbo boost is turned off, so that is what might happen on the mobile series.

    What page?

    EDIT: DW found it.

Is pin 30 connected to GND?

If it is, I don't think you can do anything except for underclock to 100mhz.

Unless there is ref1 which is not shown in the manual. I still think a full datasheet would help.

overclocking via pin mod was possible with the C2D only to the few of us who have/had an ATi chipset. The C2D didn't work with an intel chipset.

This is to say that it is unlikely for us to find a pin mod hack to overclock the core i :(

.........the best way to overclock (in my opinion) is through the Bios. Shame not enough info on the subject of Bios modding and patching is availble online. Imagine if everyone could up their FSB or BCLK through their Bios!

If you could get ahold of a full M17x BIOS dump you could mod the % values in the BIOS to what ever you wanted but sadly there is no full dump avaliable and its impossible to reconstruct it

Can you develop a bit more. Do you mean that you know/can already hack your bios and that the only thing stopping from doing it right now is the info that can be gathered from a bios dump?

Not as easy as Moo made it sound but yes you can edit your bios however there are VERY FEW people who are educated enough in that field to do so. Even if you find someone it's a very slow and poorly documented process changing with every bios.

Why would you need to extract the bios? Don't you have access to the binary file when you update the bios?

the M17x bios is unique that it already has ALL the commands and such to actually interact with the SMbus and change the BCLK all i need is a full bios dump and i just go find the values and change them ....

Just to clearify things in my head.

1- The BCLK can be changed directly inside the BIOS.
2- The module concerned with BCLK is SMBUS.ROM (case of a Phoenix Bios).
3- BCLK can be changed in SMBUS.ROM if someone knows what hex value need changing.

Are the above statements all correct?

setfsb being developed again!! New versions are now shareware. It requires a donation of 500yen (US$5.50) via paypal to get an activation key to then provide GUI/commandline interface to set your FSB. Without the activation key it's only useful to get the FSB/PLL details.
