    Currently I bought a dell 700m laptop,
    1.8Ghz
    512 DDR 2 Dimm
I use it for programmming and some games playing.

I am trying to install a 1GB Memory PC2700 stick, make it 1.25GB in total. Will that actually boost up my laptop performance? I heard from my friends that it actually won't make any significant improvement on the speed.

    Should I updgrade?

    thanx

Upgrading the hard drive will help as well.

When you say that "upgrading your hard drive will help as well" what do you mean? Do you mean having a bigger hard drive or having a faster hard drive?

Looking at the specs on the 7200rpm versus the 4200rpm hard drives I see that the faster drives also use more power than the slower drives.

If the memory helps prolong battery life, I would think that has to do with the computer using the hard drive less but I'm very curious of what you meant.

    Thanks,

    Joe

The extra power consumption on a 7200RPM drive is very small. I have one in my ThinkPad. It seems the same to me, maybe a few minutes. A computer with a faster hard drive will boot faster, applications will not lag when opening them. If you do have to use the swap file that will be faster. Basically anything where you use the hard drive the 7200RPM drive will be faster. People often only think of the CPU when determining the speed. The speed is dependent on many things. The CPU, the amount and speed of memory, hard drive speed, chipset, etc. Here is a good article if you want to look:
