Will we be able to use/upgrade to the Merom XE chips in the near future? Can you upgrade just like a desktop mobo?

NM.. I found out it is a Socket P so i guess even if we could upgrade it wont be to this chip. Or am i wrong in this? Will Socket P be compatable with Socket M mobos?

As you've already found out, Merom is on a Socket P motherboard, completely different to the current Socket M motherboards, so you assumed correctly.

Still I want to add this. Why would you ever upgrade to the 2.66 GHz Santa Rosa if you already have a 2.33 GHz Merom? :)

some people just want the best. And everybody knows that adding an X to the name gives it at least a 20% boost in performance.

If you want the best then you can better upgrade your whole system to a Santa Rosa with DX 10

i know that and you know that, and most likely the OP knows that. I was just saying that some people like to spend extra money to get the best, even though they don't need it and it's basicly just a waste of money. Allthough you do get a X in the name of the processor... :p

I wasnt thinking of the 2.66 version that is just the beginning. I was thinking more of the near future where there might be a 3GHz or higher chip. Basically trying to see if i could save money in the future by upgrading the chip vice buying a new laptop. I still learning about laptops and what can or cant be done with them.

Another question, If i stick a VTEC badge and an R badge on my comp do you think i could get another 1GHz out of the 2.66 Merom chip?

add that and a twin turbo badge and i guarantee at least 1,5 Ghz. And since it's twin turbo it's the equivalent of 3 Ghz of "regular" Cpu speed.

On another note: does anybody remember the turbo button available on old 486 PCs. I don't quite remember what it did (since i was like 6 or 7 at the time), but I remeber digging it.

If i remember right the turbo button was actually made to slow things down :p the default was with the turbo on but some programs couldnt run on the faster setting so you could switch off turbo to make it work. Sort of like the windows compatibility modus :D

I barely remember the 386, when we switched in the early 90's. HAH! you're old(er than me). I remember our old Compaq 486 laptop though.
