I was wondering if this drive has dual layer capabilities?

Secondly, if you do have a DL burner, do you need to buy special discs that are also DL supported or can you just burn DL on a standard DVD-R?

You need Dual Layered discs, and DL isn't being very advertised alot since the discs are quite pricey and often not worth it.

With stuff like HD-DVD and BluRay around the horizon, DL looks quite.....dead :(

Yup the media is pretty poor in addition to being costly. It didn't go thru enough development and there wasn't enough demand for it to mature. Plus most drives produce lower quality burns on DL media.

With blu-ray and HD-DVD drives being released and announced, DL has reached a premature end.

Well, it depends on which media you buy, I guess. I've used many Mitsubishi DL discs over the last year or so and they have performed flawlessly for me. I use them for mastering dual layer budget DVD titles for replication, so I'm pretty fussy.

I believe your comment above about the media being costly leads to your concerns regarding quality... If DL media costs ~$2.50 USD per disc, of course you're going to be tempted to buy the el cheapo Ritek at $1.79 each. Of course, you get what you pay for.
