I heard about the MSI GX630, which has a Nvidia MCP77 motherboard and a MXM III slot. Would I be able to upgrade the GPU on this laptop?

yes, but you might as well just start off and buy a laptop with tghe GPU you want and save the hassel. by the time you wanna upgrade your gpu you'll probably want a new toy anyway =)

So would any GPU work? the 9800GTX or the 9700GTS? I heard bad things about ATI GPUs... Would it be as simple as just swapping it out and putting the other card in?

I am quite happy with the pair of 3870s I have. Don't believe everything you read?

Well, that's comforting. The highest- end card I would probably ever want is the 9800GTX... would it fit/ work well with thermal stuff/ be compatible with the aformentioned specs/ be worth it? Sorry I have so many questions, MXM is just so confusing...

Don't think it's the same MXM type. I doubt you will be able to upgrade much, if at all.

take a pic of your MXM slot to confirm if it can handle which cards.

I recommend to read up at www.mxm-upgrade.com

Also... you can contact Ice-Tea (he runs MXM-Upgrade), he will answer any MXM related questions you might have.
    - he isnt the "Master of MXM" for nothing. ;)

    Definitely email MXM upgrade.
I do not think that your MSI will be able to power more than a 9600mGT.
A 9800series card is most likely out of the question.

Please post back when you find out what graphics cards your system supports

I don't actually have the system yet, lol... I was just seeing whether I can upgrade it later or not. I wanted to know if I could have a future-proof laptop that costs less than most of the other brands... So I can't do anything with pics/ scans because I dont have it yet.

"future proof" notebooks..... thats a hard one since most notebooks fall into a certain mobile platform that will always have an upcoming platform to replace it.

as for videocards, if (and only if) a system is truly standard MXM.. it may stand a chance for upgrades.

In recent years, it seems that the custom high-end notebooks (usually Clevo, Asus, and Arima) seem to have videocard upgrade paths... the best being the MXM Type IV (which only resides in high-end Clevo notebooks)
