It is an MXM 3.0 type A slot. If I'm not mistaken, the best card You can put in there is AMD Radeon 6770M, if it fits in Your laptop's thermal envelope. The card has to be compatible with Your laptop's BIOS as well.
Maybe others will come up with more ideas.

would it be possible to buy a GPU fan and put it on the MXM Card? rather using unique shaped heat pipes from the fan to the MXM Card?

Each laptop has unique cooling system. You could contact Dell or try searching ebay, or NBR Marketplace in order to get one that fits Your laptop.

its not a laptop its an all in one pc...i dont mind modding the back of the case..but i think there would be enough room for a fan to go on top of the mxm without sticking out the case...but would te fan on the mxm be sufficent?

Honestly I don't know, but I doubt that just a fan will be able to cool down the GPU. You'd need a heatsink-fan combo for that.

    PROBLEM SOLVED!

Spoke to Dell, they said my PC can be upgraded via MXM..now its £90 for the Graphics and Fan, Heat Sink Assembly or £160 for the Parts plus a engineer to fit it....what would you do?

    Buy a new system?

It doesn't make much sense to get a small boost in performance (or large, in gaming...) for almost 1/3 of the price of the system. It just doesn't.

This is almost a year old, correct?

It may seem like you get a 'new-like' computer for £160, but you're actually that much behind in saving towards a new one (whose integrated graphics are probably better than the discrete part you want to put in).

I vote: not worth the upgrade unless you'll be keeping this system for at least another 2-3 yrs - and - the performance increase to the dgpu is at least 10x what you are getting now with the igpu.

    My system Spec

    23inch monitor
    i5 460m 2.53ghz (2.9ghz turbo)
    8 GB Ram
    500 GB (ssd soon)

    + ATI 5470 HD 1GB VRAM

for me that will last for the next year or 2...i'm going to pay £90 for the parts and fit it myself

I'd try to get just the heatsink+fan from Dell and a different aftermarket card.

I would just get a different heatsink and card altogether.
It looks like the only limitation to a type B card would be your chassis.

The user Pkhetan sells some very high performance Clevo cards with heatsinks here in the marketplace. You could try a 6970m which would put your system among the highest performing single GPU mobile systems out there.
I think you'd want to get an x7200/x8100 heatsink. These heatsinks shape is only as big as the card itself, so there wouldn't be too many issues.

Of course that is quite a bit, your motherboard may not be able to supply enough wattage, you'd need a bigger PSU, etc.

Better idea might be a gtx 260m from an alienware system. These go for about 100$ or less. A lot of stupid sellers on Ebay think they are 8700m which is a much older card. I just got one for 65 USD.
This card is still a little better than the 6770m.

You would still have to find a heatsink. Note that the original heatsink for your system would not fit. However, again given the room in your chassis you could use almost any MXM 2.0 type III or 3.0 heatsink that didn't have heatpipes in the direction of your motherboard.

There is not enough vertical room for a MXM-B card as far as I can tell.

Oh and the 6770M is actually faster than a GTX285M.

    Oh the march of technology.

Many thanks for all your responses!! greatly appreciated! just to let you know, i have upgraded my AIO from p6100 to - i5 460 (Vast improvement in performance) 4 GB Ram to 8 GB..love it! and ATI 5470 1GB MXM Card! supplied by Dell but they didnt send my fan! to go with the heatsink so waiting for my fan before i plug my MXM Card in again as it goes to 98 degrees when gaming! which must be bad!

The fact that it works at all is impressive without a heatsink, never seen a 5470 MXM card before. Any chance of pictures?

Hi Meaker, I've just recieved my Fan today to go with the heatsink, as soon as i get in home from work, i will take pictures whilst i'm fitting the MXM Card + Fan + heat sink...altho saying that if you look at my very first post the link i provided contains pictures which are exactly the same as my MXM Card / Motherbaord / Heatsink...hope the fan makes a difference as it seems so far away from the mxm card
