My laptop has recently started to make really, really loud noises, which I think are coming from either the fan or the fan motor. It's a really loud creaking, whirring sound that spurts once or twice when the laptop first boots, and then periodically once the desktop and startup has finished loading. It just randomly started doing this one day; the laptop seemed to be louder than usual, so I shut it off and then, when I turned it back on the next day, the noise started. It's rather annoying because I'd like to use the laptop during classes to take notes, but with as much noise as it's making, it would only distract other people.

I've already tried blowing compressed air into almost every crevice of the computer to no avail. Would this mean the laptop fan would need replacing? Is that hard to do and expensive? The noise isn't completely constant. Once I've left the laptop on for a thirty or so minutes, the noise evens out and I just get the normal hum. I'm a college student and there is a IT help place, but I don't know if they'd be able to help much...

If you are still under warranty then contact Fujitsu and get it fixed. In most cases the noise might be due to something clogging the fans or stuck in the fan blades. In your case since the noise is not constant and blowing compressed air didnt fix it, it might be an issue with the fan itself & replacing it is the probably best option.

I once had an S2020 and the fan started making noises just after the 1 year warranty expired. I obtained a spare fan at reasonable cost but couldn't dismantle the computer far enough to make the swap. I sold the computer and the spare fan to a friend who eventually got fed up with the noise and managed to make the swap.

You will find more discussion about the S series at LeoG.net. In my opinion, the relatively thin chassis of the S series necessitates a small fan running at relatively high speed and the extra heat given out by the AMD CPUs means that the fans wear out faster than in the Intel-powered versions of the S series.
