I have an ancient Amilo A1650G

    Specs here: Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo A1650G - Notebookcheck.net External Reviews

I cant make much sense of all of that.

This laptop is in really good condition and my mother-in-law really likes it. I would be happy to buy better new or (more than likely 'used') parts from Ebay for this laptop to have it run as fast as possible.

The page I linked shows pretty much everything to do with it.

Some things I'd like to know.

Does this laptop run Vista? Even Vista basic, the most stripped down vista.
What's the best processor I can pop in this laptop?
Does this laptop run more than 1GB of RAM?

Speaking of RAM I've looked everywhere and I swear this laptop doesn't have ANY Ram at all... I've checked all the specs in this machine and I can't see any mention of Ram...

Anyway I am really interested in salvaging this laptop. Since I can do it for free, my mother-in-law pays whatever tiny bit the costs will be from Ebay etc.

Anyone know their way around Amilo's?

    Here's my specs real quick:

Here's some info in german with pictures... amilo-forum.de • Thema - Speichererweiterung Amilo 1650

Memory slots are under the keyboard. Official maximum is 2x512MB but unofficially it's probably 2x1024MB (it either works or doesn't). In that linked thread some users have put one 1GB stick and kept one older 256 or 512MB in the second slot.

You currently have AMD ML-32 1800MHz installed.
Fastest CPU available on the socket 754 mobile is ML-44. It's up to you to decide how much extra 600MHz is worth when you check the prices :)

I wouldn't install Vista, I'd rather get Win7 somewhere. It runs much smoother on low amount of ram. I've tested Win7 on 512MB, 1GB and 2GB configurations on my former netbook and it worked fine like XP. If you won't put in Win7, then stick to XP instead of Vista.
