    Hello,

My notebook's hard drive recently died so I'm currently looking for a replacement. My notebook is an Acer 1692 WLMI using an ATA 2.5'' HDD.

I don't need much internal space since I have a 320gb external drive. I also want the least expensive hard drive available since my notebook is crap anyways.

    Any suggestion?

    Thank you!

Thanks odin. I looked at the WD and it is exactly what I'm looking for, except for the size. I think a 80GB HDD would be better for me since I will be using 2 OS on it. I did not find any ATA 5200RPM 80GB HDD on Newegg though.

You're right about the performance. My laptop is getting old, so performance is the least of my concerns. However, I would prefer a 5400RPM over a 4200RPM.

I forgot to mention that I live in Canada. Is there an online retailer such as Newegg in Canada ? I know about NCIX.com but they don't have much stuff for notebooks.

Aren't there any 80GB 5400RPM ? The one you found is running at 7200RPM, which explains why the price is so high compared to the 40GB.

Nevermind: I found one on newegg

Yes I did but they are both SATA disks.
My laptop uses ATA and I did not find cheap 80GB ATA HDD on ncix.

Silly, both SATA/serial hard drives and IDE/PATA/parallel hard drives are ATA drives. ATA stands for Advanced Technology Attachment. One's just serial and the other is parallel. PATA drives used to be called ATA until SATA came along.

No, actually ATA is the original name for what we now call PATA hard drives. The "Parallel" was just added to distinguish from the newer SATA hard drives. He has an original ATA hard drive, also known as ATA-6, PATA, or IDE, and it is definitely not the same thing as a SATA hard drive.

I added that already. I meant in reference to the current names. What I really meant to say was that he should use today's terminology as to not confuse people ^^

I'm so bored that I'll explain further. Let's say there's a man named Bob. Bob has a child whom he names Bob after himself. Both are, in fact, Bobs.. although they are not the same Bob. However, rather than confuse people by just saying "Bob" all the time, people may refer to the father as "Big Bob" and the son as "Little Bob." Ergo, we now call the original ATA drives PATA (or sometimes IDE, think of it as a middle name) and we call its legacy by SATA. It's just less confusing that way ^^

Wow I wasn't expecting so many replies :)

Sorry for using wrong terminology, I really meant IDE.

Thanks, I will have a look on eBay, even if I am not particularly fond of it.
