what are the "good" ones? I want to be able to record video on my laptop with a component input, ideally.

rep+ for being good and cheap.

What will you do with the recorded video? If posting to web, composite or s-video would work great. Component is best if you're capturing for hd editing. Also, component capture cards are very expensive. I could only find this one that accepts component input and it's $150. Also it records to H.264.

If you go for a composite/s-video capture card you have a lot of options. More important than the hardware is the software you plan to sue.
